빌헬름의 중천건괘의 상전 해석

빌헬름 주역의 64괘가 시작되었습니다.

빌헬름은 중천건의 해석을 공자의 상전을 중심으로 하고 있습니다.

레게와 달리 빌헬름은 괘사와 효사의 해석을

공자의 상전에 기대고 있다는 사실이 흥미로웠습니다.

상전의 영어 해석은 어떤 내용을 이루고 있을까요?

내용을 요약해 보면 이러합니다.

 

 

중천건(Ch’ion)의 상(IMAGE)은

하늘의 움직임은 힘으로 가득차 있습니다.

그러므로 군자(superior)는 스스로 강하고 지치지 않습니다.(自强不息)

THE IMAGE

The movement of heaven is full of power.

Thus the superior man makes himself strong and untiring.

 

 

건괘의 괘사는 하늘이 이중으로 겹쳐서 있는 것으로 하늘의 운동을 나타냅니다. 이것은 우리의 시간 개념을 뜻합니다.

(This creates the idea of time.) 

이 상을 모델로 삼아 군자는 자신의 성장을 지속시키고 강하게 만들어 나갑니다. 

그는 의식적으로 품위를 떨어뜨리는 것을 자신에게서 몰아냅니다. 

이러한 힘으로 군자는 집중과 몰두의 장으로 들어가 지치지 않고 수행합니다. 

(With this influence may endure. He must make himself strong in every way, 

by consciosly casting out all that is inferior and degrading. 

Thus he attains that tirelessness which depends upon consciously limiting the fields of his activity.)

 

 

중천건의 초구, 잠용물용(初九, 潛龍勿用)입니다.

물에 잠겨 있는 용이니 활동하지 말라고 합니다.

(Hidden dragon. Do not act.)

 

 

초효의 힘은 여전히 땅 밑에 숨겨져 있어 효력이 없습니다. 이것은 인간사에서는 아직 인정받지 못하는 위인을 말합니다. 

그렇지만 그는 그 자신에 충실합니다. 

그는 자신이 외적인 성공이나 실패에 영향을 받는 것을 허락하지 않고 자신감을 가지고 때를 기다립니다. 

아직 때가 무르익지 않았기에 억지로 얻으려는 시도로 자신의 힘을 소비하지 않습니다.

(Here this creative force is still hidden beneath the earth and therefore has no effect. 

In terms of human affairs, this symbolizes a great man who is still unrecognized.

 Nonetheless he remains true to himself. 

He does not allow himsief to be influenced by outward success or fail, but confident in his strength, he bides his time. 

One need not fear least strong will should prevail; 

the main thing is not to expend one’s powers prematurely in an attempt to obtain by force something for which the time is not yet ripe.)

 

 

구이는 현룡재전 이견대인(見龍在田 利見大人)입니다.

구이효는 나타난 용이 밭에 있으니 대인을 만나는 것이 이롭습니다.

(Dragon appearing in the field. It furthers one to see the great man.)

 

 

구이효는 인간사로 볼 때 위대한 사람이 자신이 선택한 활동 방향성에서 모습을 드러내는 것을 말합니다. 

이 자리의 그는 의식적으로 노력하지 않지만 주변의 환경에 영향을 끼치는 존재입니다. 

(This means that the great man makes his appearance in his chosen field of activity.)

 

 

구삼효는 군자종일건건, 석척약, 려 무구(君子終日乾乾, 夕惕若, 厲 无咎)입니다.

군자가 종일토록 부지런히 노력하고 저녁에는 잘못이 없었는지 두려워하며 반성한다면, 위태하더라도 허물은 없을 것입니다.

(All day long the superior man is creatively active.

 At nightfal his mind is still beset with cares. Danger. 

No blame.)

 

 

구삼효 자리의 군자는 충만한 내면의 힘으로 외부의 활동을 건실하게 해 나갑니다. 

저녁에 다른 사람들이 쉴 때도 그는 자신의 계획과 걱정을 이어갑니다. 

하지만 위험은 낮은 자리에서 높은 곳으로 도약할 때 도사리고 있습니다. 

하지만 진정한 위대함은 유혹에 손상당하지 않습니다. 

새벽의 시간에 깨어 있는 사람은 모든 함정을 피할 수 있을 만큼 신중하고 흠잡을 곳이 없습니다.

(His inner power is adequate to the increased outer activity. 

There are all sorts of things to be done, and when others are at rest in the evening, 

plans and anxieties press in upon him. 

But danger lurks here at the place of transition from lowliness to the heights.

 However, true greatness is not impaired by temptation. 

He who remains in touch with the time that is dawning, 

and with its demands is prudent enough to avoid all pitfalls, and remains blameless.)

 

 

구사효는 혹약재연 무구(或躍在淵 无咎)입니다.

연못에 있으면서 때로 뛰어오르니 허물이 없습니다.

(Wavering flight over the depths. No blame.)

 

 

위대한 사람에게는 두 가지의 가능성이 주어집니다. 

그는 높은 자리로 도약하여 세상에 중요한 역할을 할 수도 있고 은둔자로서 자신을 성장시킬 수도 있습니다. 

그는 영웅 또는 성현의 길을 갈 수 있습니다. 

그 길에는 존재의 일반적인 법칙이란 없습니다. 

만약 진정하게 자신에게 충실하다면 그는 자신에게 맞는 방법을 찾을 것입니다.

(A twofold possibility is presented to the great man: 

he can soar to the heights and play an important part in the world, 

or he can withdraw into solitude and develop himself. 

He can go the way of the hero or that of the holy sage who seeks seclusion. 

There is no general law of his being. 

If the individual acts consistently and is true to himself, he will find the way that is appropriate for him.)

 

 

구오효는 비룡재천 이견대인(飛龍在天 利見大人)입니다.

나는 용이 하늘에 있으니, 대인을 만나는 것이 이롭습니다.

(Flying dragon in the heavens. It furthers one to see the great man.)

 

 

 

 

공자는 이 대목을 이렇게 말합니다.

"자왈, 동성상응, 동기상구, 수류습, 화취조, 운종용, 풍종호. 성인작이만물친, 본평천자친상, 보평지자친하, 즉각종기류야

(子曰, 同聲相應, 同氣相求, 水流濕, 火就燥, 雲從龍, 風從虎. 聖人作而萬物覩, 本平天者親上, 本平地者親下, 則各從其類也)

-공자는 말했다. 

같은 소리는 서로 응하고 같은 기운은 서로를 찾는다. 

물은 습한 곳으로 흐르고, 불은 건조한 곳으로 타 들어간다. 

구름은 용은 좇고, 바람은 호랑이를 따른다. 

성인이 나타나면 만물이 그를 우러러 본다. 

하늘에 근본한 자는 위와 친하고, 땅에 근본한 자는 아래와 친하니, 각기 그 류를 따르는 것이다."

(Confucius says about this line:

Things that accord in tone vibrate together. 

Things that have affinity in their inmost natures seek one another.

 Water flows to what is wet, fire turns to what is dry. 

Clouds (the breath of heaven) follow the dragon, wind (the breath of earth) follows the tiger. 

Thus the sage arises, and all creatures follow him with their eyes. 

What is born of heaven feels related to what is above. 

What is born of earth feels related to what is below. Each follows its kind.)

 

 

상구효는 항용 유회(亢龍 有悔)입니다.

높이 올라간 용은 후회가 있을 수도 있습니다.

(Arrogant dragon will have cause to repent.)

 

 

사람이 너무 높이 올라갔을 때 다른 사람들과 연락이 끊기게 되고 이것은 필연적으로 실패로 이어집니다.

(When a man seeks to climb so high that he loses touch with the rest of mankind, he becomes isolated, and this necessarily leads to failure.)

 

 

용구는 견군룡, 무수 길(見群龍, 无首 吉)입니다.

여러 용이 나타나는데 우두머리가 없으니 길합니다.

(There appears a flight of dragons without heads.  Good fortune.)

 

 

힘은 용이 나르는 것으로 나타나고, 유순함은 그들의 머리가 숨겨져 있는 것으로 나타납니다. 

이 의미는 행동의 부드러움이 결정의 힘과 결합되어 길함을 가져옵니다.

(Strength is indicated by the flight of dragons, mildness by the fact that their heads are hidden. 

This means that mildness in action joined to strength of decision brings good fortune.)
